Blank Slate
The starting point, the very first step I recommend when it comes to how to decorate shelves is removing all items and starting with a blank slate. This lets you clear your mind and truly see the potential of the space.
Books
Books are the foundation of shelf styling and we all know you need a strong foundation to succeed. This is your chance to display your favorite books. I tend to lean toward books with neutral spines because they create a cleaner, more cohesive look.
Vases
This is where we add texture and curve details to the shelves. Vases, whether ceramic, glass, or metal, bring visual interest to your shelf display. They are a simple yet elegant way to make your shelf decor ideas more dynamic.
Art
Artwork, or what I like to call an aesthetic memory, is another wonderful way to display personal moments in an abstract way. Choosing the right piece makes all the difference when it comes to how to decorate shelves.
Bowls & Boxes
Bowls and boxes are layering essentials! Focus on incorporating pieces that complement the design of the space rather than just sentimental pieces. This approach helps to create a unified and cohesive look.
Decorative Items/Collectables
This is where the storytelling comes in with each piece. I love that you can select beautiful objects that spark a memory, but it doesn't have to be from a decor shop. They can still serve as a reminder of a vacation or a special moment in your life. Every trip I take, I bring home a decorative item and I’m sure you now will too!
Picture Frames
Pictures are the personal touch all shelves need. Frames are an obvious way to tell your story, but be mindful of how you place them. I like to spread them out across the shelves to create a balanced and harmonious look. It’s these small details that can elevate your decorative shelves.
